The ItAlien recommends: Canzone

Lucio Dalla is one of those historical Italian singers and songwriters whom I really like. He was struck last night by a heart attack and he passed away. His loss is sudden and all my friends on Facebook, whom have listened to Dalla’s songs through their parents or knew him as a cultural staple of Italian modern music, are just as saddened as the grown-ups who have liked him since his debut.

What I liked about Dalla was the ability to mix Italian ancestral and traditional sounds with sophisticated lyrics and some sort of a sincere kindness, playfulness and melancholy.
A gypsy voice for a gypsy soul, who belonged to Italy and to every place that has something in common with it, which really means every place somehow.

Canzone is his song that I love the most.

Non so aspettarti più di tanto
I can’t wait for you that long
Ogni minuto mi dà
Each minute gives me
L’istinto di cucire il tempo
The instinct to sew time
E di portarti di qua
And to bring you here

Ho un materasso di parole
I have a mattress of words
Scritte apposta per te
Written for you only
E ti direi spegni la luce
And I’d tell you to turn off the light
Che il cielo c’è
Cause there’s the sky

Star lontano da lei non si vive
Being far from her it’s impossible to live
Stare senza di lei mi uccide
Being without her kills me

Testa dura, testa di rapa
Hardhead, Muttonhead
Vorrei amarti anche qua
I’d like to love you here as well
Nel cesso di una discoteca
In the shitter of a club
O sopra il tavolo di un bar
Or on a table in a bar
Lo stare nudi in mezzo a un campo
Being naked in the middle of a field
A sentirsi addosso il vento
Feeling the wind on us
Io non chiedo più di tanto
I don’t ask for much
Anche se muoio son contento
I’m content even if I die

Star lontano da lei non si vive
Being far from her it’s impossible to live
Stare senza di lei mi uccide
Being without her kills me

Canzone, cercala se puoi
Song, look for her if you can
dille che non mi perda mai
Tell her not to ever lose me
va per le strade e tra la gente
Go, in the streets among people
diglielo veramente
Tell her truthfully

Io i miei occhi dai tuoi occhi
My eyes off of your eyes
Non li staccherei mai
I’d never take
E adesso anzi me li mangio
Actually I’m gonna eat them now
Tanto tu non lo sai
You don’t know anyway
Occhi di mare senza scogli
Sea eyes with no rocks
Il mare sbatte su di me
The sea hits on me
Che ho sempre fatto solo sbagli
I only ever made mistakes
Ma uno sbaglio che cos’è?
But what is a mistake?

Star lontano da lei non si vive
Being far from her it’s impossible to live
Stare senza di lei mi uccide
Being without her kills me

Canzone, cercala se puoi
Song, look for her if you can
dille che non mi lasci mai
Tell her to never leave me
va per le strade e tra la gente
Go in the streets among people
diglielo dolcemente
Tell her sweetly

E come lacrime la pioggia
And like tears, the rain
Mi ricorda la tua faccia
Reminds me of your face
Io la vedo in ogni goccia
I see it in every drop
Che mi cade sulla giacca
That falls on my jacket

Star lontano da lei non si vive
Being far from her it’s impossible to live
Stare senza di lei mi uccide
Being without her kills me

Canzone, trovala se puoi
Song, find her if you can
dille che l’amo e se lo vuoi
Tell her I love her and if you wish
va per le strade e tra la gente
Go in the streets and among people
diglielo veramente
Tell her truthfully
non può restare indifferente
She can’t remain indifferent
e se rimane indifferente
And if she remains indifferent
non è lei.
That’s not her.

Phewww…that’s my attempt at translating it. Be kind and push play.
